  • Legacy & Sankofa: Healing from Institutional Violence While Building a Community of Practice

Sanfoka is a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve” and often represents the importance of learning from the past. We will create space to grieve about the historical and current harms that health and research institutions have caused LGBTQIA+ and other minoritized communities. We will also lift up the resilience of our communities and pathways forged to create a better present. Together, we will discuss ways that we want to hold this duality of experiences within our work in LGBTQIA+ health research and create joy moving forward.

***Content warning: This session will discuss real harms that institutions have inflicted (and continue to inflict) on the community, with an invitation to share your perspectives. As this content may be triggering, we will incorporate self-care practices into the session and invite attendees to practice self-care in the ways that are most supportive for them (which may look like stepping out for portions or all of this session, breathing exercises, staying hydrated, etc.).

    Learning Objectives/Intended Outcomes:
    • Discuss the impacts of institutional harms within a space that allows for both grieving and lifting up resilience.
    • Identify self-care practices to consider using when confronted with institutional harms (historical and/or present).
    • Co-create pathways and model language for being able to acknowledge the historical and current institutional harms caused to the LGBTQIA+ community while also building trust and sharing how PRIDEnet’s work is different.

    Speakers:
    • Shalonda Ingram (s:he), Participant Advisory Committee
    • Daniel Moretti, MSc (all pronouns), PRIDEnet Community Engagement Lead

  • Have a well-deserved break with some delicious snacks! Taking a moment to enjoy a snack can elevate your mood and recharge your energy.

  • Recharge in a flash with our quick energizing activity!

  • Harnessing Data for LGBTQIA+ Health: Insights from All of Us and The PRIDE Study Researchers

    Location: Cedar Room

This breakout session is intended for both researchers and non-researchers to learn more about how data from The PRIDE Study and the All of Us Researcher Workbench is being used to conduct LGBTQIA+ health research. We will include a brief presentation of basic research concepts as they relate to The PRIDE Study and the All of Us Research Program, followed by a panel discussion with current PRIDEnet-affiliated researchers who will discuss the significance and impact of these two research endeavors and why they choose to use this data.

    Learning Objectives/Intended Outcomes:
    • Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and how this relates to community-engaged research activities at PRIDEnet.
    • List some of the benefits of using data collected by The PRIDE Study and the All of Us Research Program to conduct LGBTQIA+ health research.
